In the Isla de Salsa festival in Fukuoka, Juan Luis Guerra and his group 440 came to Fukuoka to give a concert. The concert was on Sunday night on the 9th of August. It was a really wonderful concert, and I believe will be the first step to introduce renown Latin American artist in the Asian market, which is very difficult to conquer, specially Japan if you don't speak Japanese or make your music understandable to them.
Por motivo del festival de Isla de Salsa en Fukuoka, Juan Luis Guerra y su grupo 440 vinieron a Fukuoka para dar un concierto. El concierto fue el domingo 9 de Agosto por la noche. Fue realmente un concierto maravilloso y creo que este concierto servirá para introducir artistas Latinoamericanos de renombre en el mercado asiático, tarea que es bien difícil de lograr, especialmente en Japón ya que para llegar a los japoneses se requiere hablar el idioma o por lo menos colocarle algún tipo de traducción o explicación en japones de las canciones. My personal experience was more of the behind the scenes of the concert. I was requested by Tiempo Iberoamericano (the NPO that organizes Isla de Salsa) if I would voluntarily act as a translator for JLG and his group. I was very happy with the offer because just the experience of meeting them in person was enough reward.
Mi experiencia personal fue mas tras bastidores del concierto. A mi me solicitaron de Tiempo Iberoamericano (la ONG que organiza Isla de Salsa) si yo me ofrecia como voluntaria para actuar como traductora para Juan Luis Guerra y su grupo. Yo estuve muy feliz con el ofrecimiento ya que la sola experiencia de poder conocerlos en persona era mas que suficiente. 
During those 3 days I have to say that I learned many things of the life of the artists, and all the troubles they need to overcome to offer the best show they can to their public.
Durante esos 3 días tengo que decir que aprendí muchas cosas de como es la vida de los artistas y de todos los inconvenientes que ellos tienen que superar para al final poder ofrecerles lo mejor a su público. Juan Luis Guerra and 440 arrived to Fukuoka on Saturday 8 around 1:30 pm with the news that part of their luggage was going to be delivered the next day, but that did not seem to affect them at all. They were all very cheerful and happy to be in Japan.
Juan Luis Guerra & 440 llegaron a Fukuoka el sábado 8 como a la 1 y media de la tarde con la noticia de que parte de su equipaje llegaría al día siguiente, pero esto no parece haberles afectado. Ellos estaban muy animados y alegres de estar en Japón.We went to the hotel to check in and later went with a group to do some shopping and to eat lunch. It was really funny to me to see that the size of the Japanese food was not enough for them, and then I realized how much my eating habits have changed since I arrive to Japan more than 4 years ago.
Luego de ir al Hotel a registrarse acompañé a algunos miembros del grupo a hacer unas compras y a comer. Me pareció muy gracioso el ver como el tamaño de los platos japoneses no era mas que un aperitivo para ellos y ahí me di cuenta cuanto ha cambiado mi forma de comer desde que llegué a Japón hace mas de 4 años.In the afternoon we went for a drive in the city and I was showing them the most interesting spots of the city that could be seen from the car.
En la tarde salimos a recorrer en el vehículo la ciudad y yo les iba mostrando los lugares mas interesantes que se pudieran ver desde el vehículo.And before going back to the hotel we stooped in a small coffee shop to grab some snacks to eat.
On the next day 9th we went to the concert place for the general rehearsal, and stayed there around 2 hours. It was very nice to see people coming closer to the JLG to take a picture with him, and there we found out that there was some people that came from all over Japan including Tokyo, that were planning to watch both the Fukuoka and the Tokyo concerts.
Antes de regresar al hotel nos detuvimos en una pequeña cafetería ya que ellos querian tomarse un café y comer algo ligero. Al siguente día fuimos al área donde tendría lugar el concierto para un ensayo general, y nos quedamos alrededor de 2 horas. Fue muy agradable para mi ver como la gente se acercaba a JLG para tomarse fotos con él y al mismo tiempo escuchabamos las historias de personas que se habian desplazado desde distintas partes de Japón incluyendo Tokyo para ver el concierto. Un caso particular fue el de un señor con su familia que planeaban ir a ambos conciertos, al de Fukuoka y luego al de Tokio.
After that we went back to the Hotel as JLG had an interview for a Japanese media. Later we went out to a musical instrument shop.
Después del ensayo general regresamos al hotel ya que JLG tenía una entrevista para la prensa japonesa. Después de eso salimos a una tienda de instrumentos musicales.
After that we went to eat a light meal, and it was really funny to see how like normal people they were debating were to eat and then what to eat, it was quite a challenge for me to translate the entire menu and ask the waitress specifically questions about each meal, but I have to say that I enjoy it very much.
Después de eso fuimos a una tienda a comer algo ligero, y fue muy gracioso para mi experimentar el como cualquier grupo de personas se debatian sobre que lugar comer y qué comer y fue un buen reto para mi el traducir las explicaciones que me daba la mesera del menú completo y de las preguntas que surgían de cada plato, pero tengo que decir que disfruté mucho de ese momento.After eating we went back to the hotel, and while they refresh and get ready for a special dinner that was arranged at the hotel, I went with the Dominican Minister that was in charge of the group to do some shopping for gifts that she needed.
Después de comer nos regresamos al hotel y mientras el grupo se refrescaba y se alistaba para una cena especial que había en el hotel, yo salí con la Ministra Dominicana que estaba a cargo del grupo a hacer unas compras de cosas que ella necesitaba.
Then we arrived at the hotel just in time for the dinner, and finally JLG was able to eat sushi in Japan. It was a special order arranged for him and his group at the hotel. I was so happy to see his dream come true.
Luego regresamos al hotel justo a tiempo para la cena y finalmente JLG pudo disfrutar de un sushi en Japón. Esto fue una sorpresa arreglada como algo especial para el y su grupo en el hotel. Y puedo decir que en ese momento me sentí muy feliz de ver ese sueño hacerse realidad para él.After the dinner they went to prepare to go to venue of the concert around 7 pm.
It was a great lesson for me to see how the manage to be so relax before giving a concert, definitely the years of experience weight a lot.
Después de la cena el grupo fue a prepararse para ir al lugar del concierto alrededor de las 7 p.m Puedo decir que para mi la mayor lección fue ver como todos se veían tan relajados antes de dar un concierto. Definitivamente que los años de experiencia pesan mucho.Then finally at 8 pm the long awaited concert stated. According to my friends the public was calling JLG like they have not done with any of the other artists that presented during the festival.
Finalmente a las 8 p.m. comenzó el tan esperado concierto. De acuerdo a lo que me comentaron algunos de mis amigos el publico llamaba a JLG como no lo habían hecho con ningún otro artista que se presentaron durante los 2 días del festival.JLG & 440 gave a wonderful concert of 1 hour an a half, fill with energy and enthusiasm. During the concert I was with the public and I could feel the energy and the happiness of the people that attended, and I also join some Dominican friends to enjoy the concert.
JLG & 440 dieron un concierto maravilloso de una hora y media, lleno de energia y de entusiasmo. Durante el concierto yo estuve entre el público y pude sentir la energía y la felicidad de las personas que asistieron. Yo misma me reuní con amigos dominicanos para disfrutar juntos del concierto.
After the concert some of the members of the band wanted to go out for a drink, we had a great time. For me was also an interesting experience as I had never visited the Bar area of my city before.
Después del concierto me fui con algunos miembros de la banda que queria ir por unos tragos, y la pasamos muy bien. Para mi también fue una experiencia interesante ya que nunca había ido a la zona de los bares de mi ciudad.
The next day they were all ready to leave for Tokyo, but for me several surprises awaited.
First JLG gave me one of his CD's signed by him and his manager Ms. Amarilis
Al día siguiente todo el grupo estaba listo para partir rumbo a Tokio, pero antes varias sorpresas me esperaban. La primera de ellas fue que JLG me obsequió uno de sus CD´s firmado por él y su manager la señora Amarilis.Second he mentioned that he liked the hakata dolls I gave him as a memory of his trip to Fukuoka, and I had the chance to explain that those dolls are only made here and that they are very famous all over Japan.
La segundo sorpresa fue que JLG me comentó que le gustaron los muñecos de Hakata que yo le había obsequiado como recuerdo de su viaje a Fukuoka y ahí tuve la oportunidad de explicarle que esos muñecos son hechos solo en esta ciudad y que son famosos por todo Japón.
