The Fortaleza Ozama (Ozama Fortress) is the oldest fort in America. It is called Ozama because it was built on the banks of the Ozama River. Ozama a Taino word, that means navigable waters or wetlands.
Santo Domingo's History. La historia de Santo Domingo. サントドミンゴの歴史
Founded by Christopher Columbus in 1492, it is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas, and was the first seat of Spanish colonial rule in the New World. Santo Domingo came to be known as the "Gateway to the Caribbean".
The original layout of the city and a large portion of its defensive wall can still be appreciated today throughout the Colonial Zone. Because of all that it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1990. The Colonial Zone, bordered by the Río Ozama, also has an impressive collection of 16th century buildings, including palatial houses and majestic churches that reflect the architectural style of the late medieval period.
After three centuries of Spanish rule, with French and Haitian interludes, the country became independent in 1821 but was quickly taken over by Haiti. It attained independence in 1844, (thanks maintly to 3 men known as the Fathers of the country: Juan Pablo Duarte, Francisco del Rosario Sanchez and Ramon Matias Mella). After its independence the Dominican Republic suffered political turmoil and tyranny, and as well a brief return to Spanish rule, over the next 72 years. United States occupation 1916-24 and a subsequent, calm 6–year period were followed by the military dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina from 1930 to 1961 when he was killed. After Trujillo’s death the political instability caused the last civil war in current Dominican history in 1965 which ended with U.S. intervention, followed by the election of Joaquin Balaguer as president which lasted until 1978 (and this period is commonly known as the 12 years). Since 1978, the Dominican Republic has moved strongly toward representative democracy, and currently its ruled by president Leonel Fernandez, who was elected by the largest majority of votes in the history of the country in a free democratic election.
